How to Rock Disco Curls

Celebs throw back to the boogiedown decade with big, bad curls — but not all looks are groovy, baby

-

Everything old is new again as stars swap blowouts and beachy waves for far-out fluffy coils. “They’re taking hair inspiration from the dancing queens of the ’70s for a puffed-out look that adds pizzazz and makes a wild and sexy statement,” says hairstylist Danny Jelaca, who has worked with A-listers including Heidi Klum and Olivia Culpo. Plus, the full-bodied style gives hair — from pin-straight strands to kinky locks — a big boost of beautiful volume. The key to coils that won’t fall flat? Start by working a golf ball–sized amount of mousse (we like Matrix Style Link Prep Volume Builder Mousse, $18, ulta.com) into the roots to provide oomph and texture as a base for the curls, then use a half-inch curling iron to create them. “The smaller the curl, the easier it is to build in mega volume.” And take cues from these foxy ladies for more tips on getting down with the retro style.

Right now I’m lusting after...

every shrunken velvet suit that came down the Altuzarra Fall/ Winter 2017 runway. I want them all!

My Tv-watching style is...

to bingewatch, a lot.

Despite fame, I’ve had my name mistaken for...

Nina. I’m assuming they mistook my name for Nina Ricci, the fashion designer. She’s fine. I love Nina Ricci. That’s cool. My favorite red- carpet hairstyle ever was... Heidi braids. I like the woods and fairy tales and unicorns, so two braids on my head? Amazing!

A star whose style I adore is...

Tilda Swinton. She’s always just cool. I really look up to her.

My most luxurious vacation was...

our honeymoon. My husband [camera technician James Heerdegen] and I went to the Maldives; we just laid on the beach and people brought us food. The oldest items in my closet are... 20-year- old bags of shoes. But I have a lot of old s---. I also have a Miu Miu coat from 2001, maybe 2000. It’s tweed, military style, and I will never ever stop wearing it! My reason for living in New York over LA is... I like being exposed to things that, you know, might be a little unpleasant but are also a reality check. Filming a full-frontal nude scene recently... wasn’t such a big deal to me because I had a merkin on. It just feels like wearing underwear…fur underwear!
