After a blowout fight, Tristan Thompson calls off the wedding to Khloé Kardashian.

Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson only started dating in September, but on a recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, they were already talking about starting a family. “He wants to have like five or six kids with me,” Khloé revealed, adding that she’d stopped taking birth control. “That is a really big step!”

It sure is. But babies weren’t the only step the pair had been planning. Khloé, 32, and her basketball-star beau, 26, secretly had gotten engaged, Life & Style has exclusively learned, and were actively planning an intimate wedding. But then Tristan had a last-minute change of heart. “He got cold feet around the NBA Finals and called things off,” says an insider. “Since he backed off so abruptly, Khloé feels as if she was left at the altar!”

Since he started dating Khloé, Tristan has gotten a lot of flak from fans. “Everyone kept talking about

the ‘ Kardashian curse,’ ” claiming dating Khloé hurt his performance, the insider says. Though he tried to blow it off, his play in the finals, when the Cleveland Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors, weighed on him. “He didn’t play up to his potential and he got frustrated,” says the insider. He and Khloé “then had a big blowup where he yelled at her that he wanted his space so he could focus on his career.”

TRYING TO LEARN FROM MISTAKES

Khloé was heartbroken. She’d been trying to do everything right this time, after her first marriage, to Lamar Odom, fell apart in a spectacularly public fashion. Respecting Tristan’s wishes, she had agreed not to get married on TV, and was keeping the engagement secret in part to prevent mom Kris Jenner from trying to cash in on it. “If Kris had known marriage was in the works, she would have tried to turn the wedding into a star-studded affair for the show,” says the insider. Khloé was planning a small, tasteful ceremony instead. But it all fell apart anyway.

UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Khloé’s friends still think they’ll make it down the aisle someday. And Khloé, who’d cheered on the Cavaliers during game four of the finals (the only game they won) on June 9, isn’t giving up. “Khloé has seen Tristan since their fight and things have cooled in their relationship, but she is dying to make it work,” the insider says. “Tristan doesn’t seem as convinced, but he loves her and he really doesn’t want to throw it all away.”
