Slowing Down

Miley & Liam: July 17, 2017 Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth make a huge decision about the future of their romance

Scott Disick and Bella Thorne’s relationship — and partying — has friends concerned.

“They’re definitely slowing things down,” an insider says of the engaged pair.

Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s dad, wanted to make something clear. He adores her fiancé, Liam Hemsworth. “He’s a good man,” the country singer said in a recent radio interview. “His family are great people. We love Liam. He’s just a great guy.”

But he’s not about to be Billy Ray’s son-in-law. On June 21, Miley’s mom, Tish, made a shocking announcement. Not only is her daughter not running off and eloping anytime soon, Tish told Mario Lopez, Miley has no plans to get married at all. “She’s always like, ‘I don’t know why everybody wants us to get married,’” Tish said. “‘It’s so perfect [as is].’” The duo aren’t splitting up, but insiders tell Life & Style the decision to call off the wedding wasn’t exactly mutual — and that it came after a huge fight. “Bottom line, Liam got cold feet,” says one insider. The stress of planning a wedding and their future “seemed to be taking over their life,” says another source. As they butted heads more and more, he suggested calling it off, and she reluctantly agreed. “Miley was really having fun imagining her wedding,” says the source, “but she knows it’s important to put a hold on everything. She loves Liam and wants it to last forever when they take that step. But it can’t be now.”

A ROCKY PATH

First, they have to focus on fixing the problems in their relationship. Over the past few months, the on/ off duo of seven years “were fighting a lot,” says the source. And it wasn’t just about tying the knot. Miley, 24, had promised to slow down her work schedule but had become consumed with promoting her new single, “Malibu,” and upcoming album. That caused tension, which only got worse when Miley would bring up wedding details. “Everything became about work or the wedding,” says the source. Liam, 27, “felt like she wasn’t paying attention to the actual relationship.”

The final straw came when Liam arranged for a private chef to come to their Malibu home and serve them a romantic dinner — and Miley took a work call in the middle of it. “They got into an explosive fight,” says the source. “They both agreed they hated how tense things had become. Especially when the wedding comes up, they fight a lot. It’s not at all what they want life to be.”

Miley knows calling it off is for the best. Still, “she’s frustrated,” says the source. “She desperately wants to be married. After all the effort she’s made to change her ways and fit into his more traditional family, she now feels like she needs to step back and wait again.” The Cyruses aren’t thrilled, either. Tish and Billy Ray “want Miley to settle down and they want Liam as a son-in-law,” says the insider. “But they’re very hopeful.” So is their daughter, who’s prepared to wait it out. “Miley doesn’t care if they’re engaged another five years,” says the source. “When the time is right, she thinks they’ll both just know.”
