Fashionistas shine a light on the big on top, sleek on bottom trend. We tell you why this, why now
Balance oversize tops with sleek, sexy bottoms.
The Celebrity Stylist Says
“It started with members of the Kardashian clan pairing oversize T-shirts with thigh-high boots, but savvy style stars have usurped the flair of the lampshade-like silhouette by adding dresses, coats and sweaters to the mix, putting a chic spin on the uneven look,” says stylist Dawn Del Russo, who has dressed celebs like Lucy Hale and Rachel Bilson. “And with big shoulders and oversize tops being on trend right now, pairing them with leg-enhancing boots creates a super-slimming balance.” Del Russo notes that as long as the boot is fitted and hits mid-thigh or higher, the sky’s the limit as to what top will slay. “An oversize trench like Hailey’s adds an air of sophistication while a ribbed turtleneck like Chrissy’s screams MILF!”
The Designer Says
“Oversize tops would skew too casual with flats and wearing them with pumps or booties would expose too much leg,” says shoe designer Monika Chiang of the eponymous brand, a favorite of Kylie Jenner and Jennifer Lopez. “So it’s no surprise that stars are donning their big tops with over-the-knee boots — it’s irreverent, sexy and strong without baring all!”
The Psychologist Says
“By pairing large tops with fitted boots, celebrities are making much more than a style statement since the shape of the unbalanced look speaks volumes about their personalities,” says Dawnn Karen, founder of the Fashion Psychology Institute. “A lampshade controls the ‘power’ or light in a room, so by mimicking one, these women are saying they want to make an impact on, and have complete control over, their surroundings.”
