The mother-daughter stars of HGTV’S Good Bones, Karen Laine and
Mina Starsiak Hawk, open up about their relationship and sudden fame.
The mother-daughter dynamic between Karen Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk has helped turn HGTV’S Good Bones into a smash hit. Not every parent-child duo want to spend that much time together, but these house rehabbers from Indianapolis make it work. “It’s ride or die,” Karen, 58, tells Life & Style. “No matter what kind of conflict we have…when you work through conflict, you strengthen the relationship.” Early on, Mina worked tables to make ends meet, and even now, Karen recently admitted, “I’m still deeply in debt.” But they built up their business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, and that led to the series. Mina, 33, says they’re a great pair because they have different approaches to problem-solving. “Mom’s more meticulous,” she says, “[while] I am a quick decision-maker.” Everything’s about to change, though: Mina is months away from becoming a mom herself. “My body is freaking out because it’s just growing a child,” she says of her first pregnancy. Karen’s freaking, too, but in a good way: “I am very excited,” she says. “I talk to the baby all the time.” With Season 3 premiering April 10, Karen and Mina are used to being noticed wherever they go. “People hear us yapping at each other,” Mina notes, “and recognize our voices!”
