SELENA SHOULDN’T BE DRINKING!

Doctors Warn:

Swinging by a store to buy a few bottles of wine isn’t typically a big deal. But when the shopper is Selena Gomez, who is battling the autoimmune disease lupus and received a kidney transplant last year, it gets complicated. Selena, 25, was captured on a fan’s video buying wine at a Target in Irvine, Calif., on April 13, and experts warn that the last thing she should be do- ing is drinking it. “When we’re talking about lupus and a kidney transplant, avoiding alcohol would be critical for her to stay well,” NYC lupus expert and rheumatologist Dr. Robert Fafalak, who doesn’t treat the star, tells Life & Style. “Alcohol can be deleterious in terms of potential interactions with some of the medications she probably takes. In addition, alcohol has some side effects [ like] stomach upsets, which could complicate things with bleeding in the stomach and could certainly make her lupus worse.” Attune Health rheumatologist Dr. Christine Lee says that while drinking in moderation might be acceptable in some cases, Selena — who’s been to rehab for what she called “issues with depression and anxiety” caused by lupus — would be smart to play it safe. “Oftentimes,” says Dr. Lee (who also hasn’t treated Selena), “it is recommended that alcohol be avoided due to interaction with anti-[organ] rejection medications.” The experts aren’t the only ones concerned about the pop star buying booze. “The mere thought that Selena could be drinking,” says an insider, “has friends worried for her health and well-being.”
