Tokay boys finish second in Salinas basketball tournament

Tokay High’s boys basketball team placed second in the three-day Alvarez Tournament in Salinas with Saturday’s 83-65 loss to North Monterey County.

Aidan Green led the Tigers with 20 points in the loss, followed by Jorge Hernandez (12 points on 4-of-9 3-point shooting), Austin Dongon (12), Luka Jovic (nine), Anam Akbar (eight), Daniel Garlick (two) and Jack Gobel (two).

Tokay (2-1) advanced with a 66-62 win over Alvarez in the semifinals on Friday, led by Dongon’s 21 points. Hernandez added 17, Brian Solori had 10 and Jovic and Green each scored nine, with Green adding 10 rebounds. The Tigers were 9-of-18 on 3-pointers as a team.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Frosh-Soph Kennedy 71, Lodi 23

The Flames fell in Saturday’s tournament game, with Luis Perez scoring five, Joey Padilla and Colton Stout four each, David Cribb three, Mateo Isquierdo, Josh Myers and Nathan Shoup two each and Jason Myers one. Freshmen

Chico 42, Lodi 41, OT

Andreas Pappas was named to the all-tournament team after Lodi’s loss for his defensive game. Ethan Bronson had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Richie Biegler had six points, Pappas had five, David King had four, Logan Stout, Jace Haro and Trevor Jackson had three each, and Brady Pike and Jeff Werder had two each.

Varsity

WRESTLING Peninsula Tournament

Tokay High won the tournament by a point, outscoring Fremont High 173-172. Dylan Kranich won the 182-pound bracket, while several more medaled — Jerett White fifth at 106, Seth Chaney fourth at 120,

Trenton Edalgo fourth at 132, Alberto Castro third at 140, Carson Wood second at 145, Carter Bozovich second at 160, Matt Cooper fifth at 170, Jared Zermeno third at 220 and James McClain fifth at heavyweigh­t.

Tokay also had wrestlers at a tournament at McNair High, with Sabien Tafoya placing third at 170, Jaime Ornelas third at 220 and Bryan Fitzhugh fifth at 126.

Ceres Tournament

Lodi’s Steven Shumate won the 170-pound bracket at the Ceres Tournament over the weekend, with other Flames medaling in Zach Oliviera-Taylor second at 120, Cody Loveall fourth at 126, Dylan Crawford fifth at 145, Nick Jasperson fifth at 152, Nathan Tipton third at 170 and Justin Medeiros second at 182.

The Flames also sent several wrestlers to McNair, with Tyler Wooldridge placing fourth at heavyweigh­t and Oliver Shelley sixth at 220.

Lodi’s girls squad wrestled at McNair with several placers — Aime Jimenez second at 101, Maryann Smith fifth at 106, Julie Lopez fourth at 137, Isabella Thompson third at 150, Hannah Wooldridge fifth at 189 and Kaylie Sauerland third at 238.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Varsity Lodi 75, Central Valley 45

Aubrey Andrews led the Flames in Monday’s victory with 14 points, with Ellie Van Tassel adding 11. Also scoring were Alaina Gravenkamp (nine), Monica Valenzuela (eight), Marissa Fabian six, Aiyanna Evans and Alexa Brand with five each, Zoe Faulkner and Veronica Alejandrez with four each, Malina Nino with three and Alexis Acosta and Katelyn Eproson with two each. Marybella Hernandez scored 17 points to help the Tigers to victory, along with eight each from Simon Medeiros and Estefani Rodriguez, six from Madison Gonzales, four from Rubie Dhillon and one from Jasmine Quezada.

Lodi 38, Central Valley 19

Maddy Ridgway had eight points, nine rebounds and four steals to help the Flames win on Monday. Ashley Vasquez led with 11 points and added four steals.

Other scorers included Calista Morita (seven points), Shelby Yarbrough (four points and seven steals), Nikki Barajas (three, Isabella Fugazi (three) and Halle Faulkner (two).

The Flames defeated Mountain House 37-6 on Saturday to win the West High Tournament, led by Yarbrough’s 10 points. Vasquez added 10 and Genesis Ramirez had six.

Varsity GIRLS SOCCER Liberty Ranch 2, Laguna Creek 0

Sydny Klink scored both of the Hawks’ goals in Saturday’s victory at the River City Tournament. McKenna Brown assisted on one of them. Carson Jackson blocked two shots to keep the shutout for Liberty Ranch (4-0-1).
