Eagles knock off 10th-ranked West in first round of Tracy tournament

The Elliot Christian boys basketball team scored another major victory on Thursday wth a 98-92 overtime victory over undefeated West-Tracy.

Elliot outscored West 12-6 in the overtime period in the opener of the seventh-annual Holiday Classic in Tracy.

Jimmy Beltz led the Eagles with 33 points after draining eight 3-pointers, while Jalen Valverde added 21 points and 11 assists. Nate Bond had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Onkar Sidhu had 12 points and eight rebounds, Cody Dohl had six points and Nick Figueroa had five.

West (8-1) was ranked 10th in the state by Maxpreps.com in the website’s Dec. 13 release. Elliot improved to 3-2 with the win. BOYS BASKETBALL Varsity

The Hawks fell to 4-3 with Thursday’s loss in the opening round of the Cosumnes Oaks Tournament. Manteca is the defending state Division III champion.

The Buffaloes built a steady lead throughout the game, leading 34-27 at halftime.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Varsity

The Eagles held on for Thursday’s win on the road, with the help of Charis Guerzo’s 9-of-14 shooting from the free throw line. Guerzo finished with a team-high 15 points.

Lexie Juelch drained a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 10 points, Tayton McCorston added six, Joann Butler had four points and 11 rebounds, Abby Ramirez had two points and six rebounds and Sophia Butler had one point and four boards.

Elliot (2-4) is off until Jan. 3, when the Eagles open league play against Venture Academy.

The Hawks started the season with a win on Wednesday, with victories from Jose Hernandez at 106, Leslie Hernandez at 113, Eric Schaffner at 126, Jesus Medina at 160 and Blake Ritchie at 195.
