VERNON F. (BUS) BARROW

Bus Barrow passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec. 18, 2016, at the age of 93. He was born August 26, 1923, in Concordia, KS and was raised by his beloved grandparen­ts. He attended high school and junior college in St. Joseph, MO, and married Mary Lou Bauman on December 26, 1949, in Falls City, NE. They moved to the Kansas City area in 1951 where he opened his first restaurant, and opened 4 more restaurant­s throughout his career. The first one was the original “Whopper Burger” prior to Burger King taking the rights to the name. Subsequent restaurant­s were under the name “Barrow’s Drive-In”. In 1976, Bus and Mary Lou moved from Kansas City to Estes Park, CO, and opened “Heidi’s Hideaway”, a family style restaurant, until retirement in 1984. They moved then to Mesa, AZ, then to Lodi, CA in 2007, to be near family.

Bus enlisted in the Navy during WWII in Feb. 1943, and was Signalman Second Class serving in the South Pacific until his discharge in Feb. 1946.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Lou Barrow; and three sons, Scott (Carol) Barrow of Loveland, CO, Chad (Andrea) Barrow of Lodi, CA, and Tracy (Tami) Barrow of Overland Park, KS; 6 grandchild­ren; and 10 great - grandchild­ren.
