Calaveras 74, Tokay 66

Free throws hurt the Tokay High boys basketball team, which lost to Calaveras 74-66 in a nonleague game in San Andreas on Friday.

Tokay (4-6) trailed 33-32 at halftime. But Calaveras made 13 free throws in the final 16 minutes of the game that helped toward the victory.

“In the second half, they shot pretty well,” said Tokay coach Travis Okamoto of Calaveras (11-1). “They (Calaveras) got it (ball) down low, and capitalized at the line.”

The Tigers’ leading scorers were Jorge Hernandez, who had 29 points. Aidan Green followed with 17, Austin Dongon nine, Luka Jovic seven and Anam Akbar four. Calaveras’ leading scorer

was Kyle Byrd, who had 19 points.

Next for Tokay is the St. Hope Academy Tournament, which will be played at various sites in Sacramento. The Tigers will play Oakland Tech at Sacramento High on Tuesday. Also in the tournament, though in a different bracket, is Elliot Christian.

“We play tough teams in pre-season because our league (Tri-City Athletic League) is tough,” Okamoto said. “This (tourney) will be a good test for us.”
