Tigers soccer takes down the Rams

The Tokay High boys soccer team opened Tri-City Athletic League play on Thursday with a 3-1 win over St. Mary’s, with the Rams’ lone goal coming on an own goal from the Tokay defense in the second half.

Ivan Rosales scored two goals for the Tigers (3-2-1, 1-0 TCAL), and Noah Schofield added a goal and an assist. Luis Baez and Joel Luis tallied assists.

Joel Luis played the first half at goalkeeper, tallying two saves, and Alex Gutierrez finished the game with another two saves. Alejandro Andrade and Luis Raza played solid defense in front of them.

The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Tracy.

BOYS BASKETBALL Varsity

The Titans had five players in double digits in Thursday’s victory, with Tony Olivarria leading the way at 27 points, 10 assists and seven steals. William Dos Reis added 19, Dylan McColley had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Rami Abu-Ramaden had 13 points and 15 rebounds and Jacob Ortiz had 12. Alex Nevis added two points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Varsity

Monica Valenzuela and defense delievered when it counted for Lodi (1-0 in the TCAL, 135) when it counted in Thursday’s league opener at the Bulldogs’ gym.

The Flames’ senior forward, a four-year starter, canned three 3-pointers in the second quarter to contribute toward one-third of the team’s 22 points. Lodi led 16-13 after the first quarter, but bumped to 3819 at halftime.

“In the second quarter, we started trapping, and we got a lot of turnovers and steals,” said Lodi coach Brandon Shea.

Valenzuela was one of three Flames who scored in double figures with 16 points. Forwards Alexa Brand was the leading scorer with 18 points and Ellie Van Tassel 12. Guard Marissa Fabian followed with nine points, Zoe Faulkner six, Aliana Gravenkamp five, Aiyana Evans four and Malina Nino, Abbey King and Katelyn Eproson had two each.

Two players scored in double figures for Lodi (1-0 in the TCAL, 16-2) in Thursday’s league opener. Shelby Yarbrough and Maddy Ridgway had 18 and 16 points respective­ly. Ashley Vasquez followed with seven points, and Emily Johnson and Isabella Sugazi two each. Freshmen

Ashley Toy led the Flames with 13 points, eight steals and five rebounds in Thursday’s loss, along with eight points, four steals and four boards from Patricia Coffaro and five points, three steals and three boards from Hannah Wilson.

BOYS SOCCER Frosh-soph

The Flames allowed one goal in the first half on an own goal, but opened the floodgates in the second half with four goals. Eddie Sandoval finished with two goals and two assists, Sam Eigenberge­r had a goal and and assist and Mark O’Hannigan had a goal.

Danny Maldonado, Tyler Freeman and Richard Herrera played solid games. Sebastian Quiroz and Jordan Baumback scored two goals each, with one each from Brandon Razo and Adrian Garcia. Assists came from Jose Gonzalez (two), Pedro Velasquez, Christian Gonzalez and Eduardo Guillen.

Miguel Cervantes and Christian Gonzalez shared the shutout in goal for Tokay (6-0, 1-0 TCAL), with solid defense from Omar Ramirez, Edwin Flores, Alexis Ceja and Oscar Hernandez.

WRESTLING

Five Lodi wrestlers scored pins in THursday’s victory — Nathan Tipton at 182, Ryan Renteria at 285, Zach OliveraTay­lor at 113, Cody Loveall at 126 and Dylan Crawford at 138.

Austin Mason (152) and Steven Shumate (160) won by major decision and Livio Mamola won by decision.

With a number of forfeits on both sides, three pins from Liberty Ranch made the difference in Wednesday’s dual.

The Hawks’ Adam Lima pinned his opponent at 145 pounds, as did Paul Siegalkoff at 160 and Blake Ritchie at 182. Thomas Thornberg added a major decision, winning 12-1 at 170 pounds.
