- NEWS-SENTINEL SPORTS WRITER By Mike Bush

Tokay High wrestling coach Ed Carlos watched his team pin down Lincoln — literally.

Entertaining the visiting Trojans at The Jungle on Thursday in their Tri-City Athletic League dual home meet, the Tigers won five of their 10 matches by pins. Sprinkle in more wins by decisions and forfeits, and Tokay improved to 4-0 in the TCAL with a 48-12 whipping of Lincoln.

The win sets-up the big showdown next week between Tokay and Lodi, which is also 4-0 in TCAL action, at The Inferno.

By the end of the third match, Tokay already led 9-0 after a 3-0 decision win by Carter Ward (145pounds) over Lincoln’s Cole Jackson, and both teams forfeited the 152 class. The six points came at 160, when the Tigers’ Carter Bozovich needed only one minute, 14 seconds in the first round to pin Lincoln’s Lorenzo Duenas.

Matt Cooper won the 170 class by forfeit to up Tokay’s lead to 15-0, Then the Tigers rolled through the next seven matches to built a 48-0 lead. Additional Tiger wrestlers who won by pins were Jaime Ornelas (220) over the Trojans’ Miguel Raya in the second round; James McClain (285) topping Kris Chongchereurn and Nick Nguyen (113) over Alex Goodwin in the second round.

“We’ve been rotating the lineup,” Carlos said.

One of the best matches of the night was at 195, with Tokay’s Jared Zermeno (195), who posted a 7-3 decision over Lincoln’s Taylor Dickson. Entering the final round, Zermeno and Dickson were tied at 3-3. But Zermeno, a senior twosport athlete who was a fullback and inside linebacker for the Tokay football team last fall, used a take down and near fall in the final 19 seconds to post the win.

“He’s wrestling a lot better than last year,” said Carlos of Zermeno. “You can see his confidence in the way he attacks.”

Other Tokay winners by decisions were Luke Millan over Daniel Henryat 7-4, Seth Chaney (120) a 7-1 decision over Evan Vang and Trenton Edelgo (138) over Elliezar Schmalbeds at 7-1. The other win by forfeit for the Tigers were by Jerret White (106).

Two matches the Tigers lost were at 126, when the Trojans’ Justin Pakele posted a 7-4 decision over Xaiver Konaz, and at 132 Lance Lo pinned Tokay’s Jordan Larsen in the second round.
