Lodi man sentenced to more than 10 years in assault on police

Marcus Amann to go to state prison for 2016 assault

- By Christina Cornejo

Marcus Amann, 19, of Lodi, who was convicted of assaulting two Lodi police officers outside of his home last year, was sentenced Tuesday at the Lodi courthouse.

Judge David Warner passed down a sentence of 10 years and 8 months in state prison for assault on two Lodi police officers with an aluminum bat on Sept. 6, 2016.

During the incident, Lodi police were sent to Amann’s residence to issue notice of trespass from an earlier incident where Amann was identified for stealing liquor from a local grocery store.

However, the situation escalated once officers made contact with Amann, who threatened the officers and struck both of them with a bat. The assault caused serious injury to one officer’s wrist and arm. That officer is still receiving treatment for those injuries and has been assigned to light duty since the assault.

Police also shot Amann, who was transported to an area hospital to treat his injuries before he was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail, where he has been held since the incident.

Officers James Macho and Robert Rench were both injured during that incident. Macho has since returned to work, but Rench is still having trouble with his wrist and is not cleared for full duty because of his injury, according to Lodi Police Lt. Sierra Brucia. Rench is currently working a modified duty assignment until he is fully healed and is frustrated

by not being able to return to full duty, Brucia said.

“We are saddened that this incident has affected so many people. Our officers and their families were affected. Amann and his family now have to deal with his incarceration and how that will affect them. It truly has impacted more than just Marcus and the officers involved,” Brucia said on behalf of the department.
