Lodi man arrested after late-night pursuit
Lodi officers were led in pursuit on Monday night of a suspect, 21year-old Joseph Howering of Lodi, who was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle and in possession of a loaded handgun, according to the Lodi Police department.
It began at around 11:30 p.m. in the area of Church and Lockeford streets when Sgt. Brian Freeman attempted to stop a silver Chevy truck for a vehicle code violation, according to the Lodi Police Department. Howering did not pull over, police said, and led both swing- and graveyard-shift officers in a pursuit that traveled through east Lodi, Acampo, Woodbridge and Lockeford.
During the pursuit, Howering struck a curb with the truck and lost both of the passenger side tires, police said. He soon lost control of the truck while turning south on Highway 12 from Jack Tone Road and the truck became disabled, police said.
Police conducted a highrisk stop and took Howering into custody at gunpoint.
Officers discovered that the truck had been stolen from Lodi, police said. During a search, police found a loaded handgun resting on the floor on the driver’s side of the truck.
Howering was arrested and booked into the Lodi City Jail on suspicion of felony evasion, vehicle theft, possession of the stolen vehicle, carrying a concealed handgun in a vehicle, being a felon in possession of ammunition, being a felon in possession of a gun, driving under the influence of drugs and possession of a controlled substance paraphernalia. Howering was previously convicted of second degree burglary in September 2016 for an offense that occurred in August that year, according to Superior Court of San Joaquin County records.
