High-flying fun at Galt Kite Day

- By Danielle Vaughn

The Galt Historical Society will be hosting the 15th annual Kite Day at McFarland Ranch on Sunday.

For 14 years, at least 100 people have gathered at McFarland Ranch every April for Kite Day — and this year will be no different.

The 15th annual Kite Day will be sponsored by the Galt Historical Society from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at McFarland Ranch, located at 8899 Orr Road in Galt.

While the weather is expected to be dry, a rain date in case the event needs to be rescheduled is set for April 9, Historical Society member Rob Jacobson said.

The event is organized by Pete and Debbie Sheragy. They will display their collection of more than 100 kites in the barn, Jacobson said.

During the event, children who don’t have their own kite will be able to make one or, if they choose, will have the option to purchase a kite at a low cost. Jacobson is hoping that they might even be able to give some kites away for free.

Food and beverages will available for purchase. Food available at the event include ice cream and a meal consisting of a hot dog chips and drink. Ice cream and sodas will be 25 cents each, Jacobson said.

Not only will children get to enjoy flying a kite, they will get to enjoy the ranch’s petting zoo as well. Families are also encouraged to pack a blanket and have picnic while observing Kite Day.

Several chairs and tents will be available for people to sit under the shade.

The society started hosting Kite Day in order to give kids the chance to have fun and enjoy themselves, Jacobson said.

“We have up to 35 kites up at a time, and it’s beautiful in the blue sky. It’s just amazing,” he said. “It’s something that we should do for the younger kids.”

Jacobson really enjoys the children’s reactions when they finally get their kite to fly, he said.

“Three-year-olds on up are trying to fly a kite and they work very hard to do it. And then they get it up and enjoy it, and it’s fun watching them,” he said.

Not only do the children come out for Kite Day, but their families do as well, Jacobson said.

“They do have a very great turnout. It’s not just a kite day. It’s kind of a family day,” he said.

Kite flying often turns into a family effort, with some parents working with their children to help them get their kites in the air, he said.

Other annual events sponsored by the Galt Historical Society at McFarland Ranch include an Old Car Show held the fourth Sunday of September, and the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Show held in October.
