OAKLAND — A Northern California man whose family searched for him for two weeks after he disappeared was being held in a hospital for a mental evaluation, police said Tuesday.

Bobby O’Leary, 21, of Santa Clara, California, went missing April 11 after running from security guards at a closed golf course where he had been walking his dog, Santa Clara Police Lt. Dan Moreno said.

He left the dog and his car with his wallet and cellphone behind, Moreno said.

Police used a helicopter, search dogs and bicycle patrol officers to search for O’Leary with no luck, Moreno said.

The course sits on the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay. O’Leary was later seen — covered in mud — walking in the marshlands, Moreno said.

He was discovered three days later drifting in a boat about 40 miles north, and rescued by fire crews and taken to a hospital, Moreno said. He was not injured.

Police said he had checked into the hospital under a different name because he did not want to be found.
