Summer class programs return to Galt high schools

- By Jennifer Bonnett NEWS-SENTINEL STAFF WRITER

GALT — For the first time in years, Galt Joint Union High School District is offering a full gamut of summer school classes starting in July.

While it is a new start for this district, Lodi Unified is heading into its fourth year of offering summer school to high school students. Prior to that, many districts throughout California including Galt and Lodi stopped offering summer school due to state budget cuts.

Last year, the Galt high school district only offered drivers’ education and very limited credit recovery courses for seniors that were short a five credits or less from graduating, according to Sean Duncan, director of educational services.

This summer, the focus will be on providing summer bridge classes for incoming freshman that are not quite ready for the rigors of high school level math and/or English. Those summer bridge courses will be for math and English to support any incoming ninth graders that score a “Nearly Meets Standards” on their SBAC tests.

Elevate Math is a research-based curriculum for students that struggle in math and score a “Nearly Meets Standards” on their eighth grade SBAC test in math. The curriculum is designed to provide these students with the skills they will need to be successful in Integrated Math I, Duncan said.

Students that take and pass this class will be prepared to take Integrated Math I in their freshman year.

Similarly, English 3D is a research-based curriculum for students that struggle in English and readying and score a “Nearly Meets Standards” on their eighth grade SBAC test in English. The curriculum is designed to improve students reading, writing, and communication skills so they will be successful in English 9. Students that take and pass this class will be prepared to take English 9 in their freshman year.

Lodi Unified will be holding summer school at two high school sites and offering classes in all disciplines and even some for acceleration, according to Dawn Vetica, assistant superintendent of secondary education.

Galt Joint Union Elementary School District, too, will have a variety of courses at all of its campuses for grades pre-kindergarten through 7. Offerings include STEAM-based learning academies, community-based learning academies and school readiness classes.

Other classes that will be offered by Galt Joint Union High School District include:

• Driver’s education (Session 1: July 10- July 21; Session 2: July 24August 4)

• Math and English acceleration and credit recovery for students that participate in the Migrant Education program.

• Flex Academy credit recovery for any of our current seniors that are not going to meet the graduation requirements by the last day of school but are within 10 credits of graduating.

Classes will be held at Liberty Ranch High School and will run Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. Applications for summer classes are available in the counseling offices of both high schools. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, May 26.
