Former Stockton mayor Silva’s legal proceedings inching along

- By Roger Phillips

Anthony Silva’s next court appearance in his Amador County legal case will be Aug. 7, one year and three days after Stockton’s former mayor was arrested at the Silver Lake camp he was running for disadvantaged youth.

Silva, 42, faces several misdemeanor charges in Amador County for alleged wrongdoing at the camp in 2015. Judge Leslie Nichols set the August court date Tuesday morning during a 30minute phone conference with Silva’s attorneys and prosecutor Rob Trudgen.

Meanwhile, Silva continues to face much more serious charges in San Joaquin County and has a hearing in Superior Court in Stockton on Monday morning.

In the case being heard in Stockton, Silva is facing charges of embezzling and laundering public money from the Stockton Boys & Girls Club, now known as the Stockton Kids Club.

Silva has steadfastly denied the charges and has entered a plea of not guilty. Next week’s scheduled court date is routine, defense attorney Mark Reichel said.

“We’re just going to set dates for future hearings,” Reichel added.

Reichel also said he and cocounsel N. Allen Sawyer still have not obtained a copy of the transcript of the grand jury proceedings that preceded Silva’s arrest in March.

By law, the transcript will remain sealed from public view until 10 days after Reichel and Sawyer get their copy.

A judge last month rejected a motion by Silva’s attorneys to seal the transcript until after there is a verdict in the case.
