White Sox beat Orioles for AAA title
A quick beginning led to a fascinating finish in the Lodi Boosters of Boys and Girls Club Sports’ AAA championship game on the Mike Moore Field at Salas Park on Wednesday.
The White Sox jumped out to a 7-0 lead. But the Orioles made a come-from-behind attempt that fell short, as the White Sox claimed BOBS’ AAA title with a 9-6 win.
In the bottom of the first inning, the White Sox used a triple off the bat of James Ash, plus three singles by Demetri Hingoyen, Tyler Zulim and Parker Hohenthanner that led toward a 4-0 lead. A walk issued to Adam Phillips, who stole second and third bases and then scoring on Hohenthanner’s single would lead to the White Sox’s final run.
The White Sox held a commanding 7-0 lead after the bottom of the second inning. A double by Hohenthanner, plus three walks to Braden Buckmiller, Spencer Cunningham and Logan Souza, all of whom scored on the extra-base hit.
But the Orioles scored their runs in the top of the fourth inning. They cut the lead to 7-1 when Cole Smallie singled and scored on a White Sox error. In the top of the fifth, the Orioles scored five more runs to make it 7-6. A combination of hit batters and walks, plus two White Sox errors were factors.
To add to their final run count, the White Sox scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 9-6. They had three hits — a triple by Chism, plus base hits from Cunningham and Demetri Hingoyen — and an Orioles’ error led to the late charge.
The Orioles had a runner on second base in the top of the sixth inning, with the White Sox still ahead with one out. But a fly ball and strike out ended the Orioles’ threat, and the White Sox earning the title.
