Mitch Walding High school: St. Mary’s Sport: Baseball Professional: Reading Fightin’ Phils (Phillies AA)
Walding, a lefthitting third baseman, went deep four times in two days — two home runs and four RBIs in Thursday’s 14-6 win over Portland, then two solo shots in Friday’s 4-3 loss to Akron. Walding had 10 home runs this season, tied for sixth in the Eastern League. Zach Phillips High school: Galt Sport: Baseball Professional: Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals AAA)
Phillips, a left-handed reliever, pitched two hitless innings in Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Omaha, then allowed one running in an inning of work in Monday’s 4-1 win over New Orleans. Gio Brusa High school: St. Mary’s Sport: Baseball Professional: San Jose Giants (Giants AAdv.)
Brusa, an outfielder, went 2-for-4 in an 87 loss to Lake Elsinore on Friday, went 2for-4 again with a home run and a double in Saturday’s 5-3 loss to Lake Elsinore, and went 2-for-4 with a run in Tuesday’s 74 win over Lancaster. He had singles on Sunday and Monday in games against Lancaster. Allie Mendez High school: Lodi Sport: Softball College: Corban University
Mendez, a senior pitcher, pitched 5 1/3 innings with two runs on four hits and four strikeouts in a 4-2 win over LSU-Alexandria in the NAIA Softball World Series semifinal on Friday, then pitched 6 2/3 innings in the championship, a 4-1 loss to Oklahoma City, allowing two runs on eight hits. Both games were nodecision appearances for Mendez as the Warriors completed the best season in Corban’s history in any sport.
