Lodi Farmers Market canceled today after forecast of 111 degrees
The Lodi Chamber of Commerce canceled today’s Farmers Market due to the sweltering heat.
“This is the first time we’ve ever canceled a big event,” Chamber President and CEO Pat Patrick said.
Temperatures have been in the 100s since last Friday and aren’t expected to cool down into the upper 90s until this weekend.
Patrick noted that forecasters are calling for temperatures to reach 111 degrees today with no breeze in sight.
“On School Street, which is brick buildings, brick street and brick sidewalks, it sort of has the effect of a brick oven. On the street it will be a lot hotter than 111. We don’t think that it’s safe.”
In addition to the scorching heat, Patrick said that farmers have told the chamber that the quality of the fruit may not be up to their standard or the consumers’ standards in such extreme conditions.
To make up for the cancellation, the chamber plans to add an extra week at the end of the season on Sept. 7, Patrick said. The bands and entertainment scheduled for today will perform on Sept. 7.
