Mixed results for Lodi-area diamond squads

A fun season came to an end for the Lodi Reds 12 and under baseball team at the Cooperstow­n All-Star Village tournament in Cooperstow­n, N.Y. on late Wednesday night.

In the single-eliminatio­n portion of the tournanmen­t, the Reds were one game away from earning a sweet 16 spot. But the Arena Stars, out of Baltimore, MD, posted a 7-0 win. The Reds’ offense was held to just three hits off the bats of Dante Cecchini, Brayden Stout and Jake Lopez.

According to Jason Evans, the Reds’ new season starts Aug. 1.

Lodi All-Stars 10s

On Sunday, Lodi opens action in the Cal Ripken State Tournament in Bakersfiel­d, playing against Ripon for the third time in a week.

Last weekend, the Lodi All-Stars 10 and under squad won the Cal Ripken District 1 All-Star tournament. Lodi outscored its three opponents by 36-4 margin.

Lodi played Ripon twice that included the second game for the district championsh­ip game with an 113 win. In the first game that was pool play, Lodi recorded an 8-1 victory. In the tournament opener, Lodi was too much for Escalon 17-0.

Members of the Lodi squad are Landon Beasley, Charlie Caszza, Andrew Fichtner, Brent Godina, Kaden Guthrie, Nick Johnson, Roman Mangrich, Felix Millan, Christian Olivares, Santino Ramirez, Slade Schmitt and Derik Wages.

Pitchers for Lodi were almost untouchabl­e at the district tournament. According to Lodi manager Tim Mangrich, his pitchers combined for a total of 32 strikeouts.
