MARIA FIRE BREAKS OUT IN FOOTPRINT OF BUTTE FIRE
CALAVERAS COUNTY — A wildfire broke out in the footprint of the 2015 Butte Fire on Monday, leaving at least one person injured, according to Cal Fire.
The Maria Fire broke out east of Mokelumne Hill on Jesus Maria Road. It grew to more than 55 acres in a little more than four hours, and paramedics responded to reports of a burn victim. The injured party was transported.
An evacuation center was set up and Mokelumne Hill Elementary School, and Red Cross volunteers were on their way.
According to Cal Fire’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, firefighters were making progress against the blaze. It was 40 percent contained as of Monday evening.
