Galt’s home study program offers more flexible learning
GALT — As students are preparing to head back to school, dozens are preparing to stay home.
They are part of Galt Joint Union Elementary School District’s Home Study program.
In existence for more than 10 years, Superintendent Karen Schauer said the district wants to remind families that this blended learning program is available as a learning option. It has recently been updated to reflect alignment with the district’s personalized learning efforts.
The responsibility for delivering daily instruction belongs to the parents. Most of the participants do online coursework, while some have a blend of online and on-campus classes such as music, physical education and other electives.
Much like the traditional on-campus education the district provides to students in kindergarten through eighth grade, the home study option includes: • Individualized instruction • Personalized Learning Plans • Credentialed instructors who meet regularly with participants to support both students and parents • On-campus opportunities • Virtual learning with technology provided • Special needs support • Classes for parents Many of the home study students hail from home-schooled families seeking flexibility of time and pace of learning, or those wanting a more active role in a child’s education, according to district officials.
Students from any district campus can also utilize the program to keep up with their coursework while traveling. For example, some are Pakistani and attend school in the United States part time. Others might be children of field workers whose families return to Mexico throughout the school year.
The district, in turn, continues to receive per-student funding from the state since the students are enrolled there. Students must reside within the district’s regular boundaries or obtain an inter-district transfer from their home district.
