Mystery at Pig’s Lake: Case of the Missing Leaf Pack

- By Efren Diego

On a rainy day a hungry river beaver was swimming around our pond looking for something to snack on. His name was Josh and he had a bad attitude.

By the way, my name is Norman and I’m a friendly river otter who also lives near the little pond called Pig’s Lake. Most beavers around here keep to themselves and don’t bother others. But Josh is different when he gets hungry or when something gets in his way. He’s known to tear things apart when angry.

A few days ago, I saw a group of young humans coming to visit our part of the lake. I personally think humans are pleasant. Josh, on the other hand, does not like humans at all because he is a little selfish and doesn’t like to share anything.

By now I’m used to seeing young humans coming over to visit, but this time they did something unusual. They placed a round looking object with holes by our lake. I was intrigued by this unusual object and decided to take a closer look. The object seemed like a nice place to hang out because it was full of leaves. I knew I would find some delicious bugs to snack on in all those leaves. The only problem was that that leafy object was placed exactly in the path where Josh loved to take breaks too at the edge of Pig’s Lake.

So that rainy day, I was taking a break near the edge of the water when I noticed Josh splashing his tail and complaining about something. I had a feeling it had something to do with the leafy object.

Josh was looking at the object when he spotted me. I knew this was trouble because beavers love to snack on twigs and leaves. So I tried to grab the object, but Josh was faster than me. In no time he tore into the leafy object devouring the leaves. It was time for me to go somewhere else to look for my snacks.

A few days later I spotted some humans looking for the round object full of leaves. From far away I could see Josh grinning his ugly teeth.
