LAWRENCE PORTER

-

1939 – 2017

On August 11, 2017, Lawrence Porter passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital with his family by his side. Lawrence was born on August 14, 1939 in Alturas, California. As the oldest of three children, he spent his childhood working the family cattle ranch alongside his parents and two sisters. His love for showing animals in 4-H and FFA was passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Lawrence graduated from Modoc High School and went to U.C. Davis. He studied Irrigation Science and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. After graduation, Lawrence joined the Coast Guard and proudly served as an officer for three years while stationed in Hawaii. He continued his service in the Coast Guard Reserves for 20 years.

Lawrence moved to King City in 1965 where he raised three children. He was the General Manager for the Salinas Land Company and California Orchard Company for over forty years. As an active member of the community, Lawrence served as a volunteer fire fighter, on the Board of the Rural Fire Protection District, the Board of Water Resources Agency, the Farm Bureau Board, Lion’s Club, and the Board of Directors of Full Gospel Church to name a few.

For five wonderful years after retirement, he and his wife traveled across America relishing the beauty of Alaska, the fall colors, Niagara Falls, all the National Parks and so much more. The thousands of pictures he took along the way are a testament to how much he loved our country. In 2010, they settled in Lodi where he became an active member of his church serving on the board, planning events and most of all, serving the Lord.

Often seen wearing his sun hat with camera in hand, he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their various events. Grandpa was always good for a funny joke, playing pranks and for “sharing” ice cream. He was known for his loving heart, sense of humor and quick mind. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, politics, traveling and being outdoors. But, what he loved most was his family.

His father, Leland Porter, mother Charlotte Porter and sisters, Carolyn and Beverly, preceded him in death.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Victoria; Uncle Oakley Porter; children, Jim (Tammy), Anne (Jerry), and David (Lori); step-children, Taunya (John), and Tamra; eight grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Radiant Life Assembly of God Church in Lodi, California (75 N. Crescent Street).

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
