Man arraigned in North Stockton stabbing death

- By Almendra Carpizo

STOCKTON — The 36-year-old man charged with fatally stabbing his girlfriend and stuffing her body in a garbage can was arraigned Tuesday in San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Daniel Hunter Winkler is facing one count of homicide with enhancements stemming from a prior strike for a residential burglary and a separate 2007 prison sentence for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On Sunday, the body of a 37-yearold woman was found wrapped inside a garbage can about 9:45 a.m. on the 9000 block of Don Boriga Way. Although the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office has not released the name of the victim, family and friends have identified her on social media as Angenai Terlouw, a Stockton mother of two.

Authorities believe Winkler killed the victim Saturday evening at a home in the 700 block of Erma Avenue, about 1.6 miles south of where she was found.

Winkler was arrested Sunday evening.

Terlouw and Winkler, who have a 5-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter together, were in a relationship and detectives believe this is a case of domestic violence.

Robert Himelblau, supervising deputy district attorney of the homicide unit, said outside court Tuesday that it is believed a child witnessed the incident. Himelblau would not say how the child is connected to the victim or suspect.

He said while the D.A. has a fair amount of evidence, the case’s difficulty will be in having to ask relatives to talk about their dead loved one and added that it’s “horrible” and “gut-wrenching” to have children involved as witnesses.

Himelblau said the D.A.’s office is evaluating some documented incidents of domestic violence to determine if more charges will be brought forward and added that investigators will be talking to neighbors, friends and family to look further into possible abuse.

“Unfortunately, in domestic violence situations there are incidents, but they’re not reported incidents,” he said.

On Tuesday, Winkler wore an orange jail-issued jumpsuit as he appeared before Judge Ronald Northup. When asked by Northup if he could afford legal representation, Winkler said he could not and a public defender was assigned to him.

Family members of the victim also were in court.

Winkler, although mostly solemn, exchanged a smile and chatted with another inmate that was arraigned. Terlouw’s family members, some crying, sat silently in the front row during the arraignment.

Terlouw’s family has set up an online fundraising campaign to benefit her children and cover funeral costs.

“Angie was taken from us in a horrible tragedy ...,” reads Terlouw’s GoFundMe site. “Her 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter have lost both parents and will need long-term counseling to cope with trauma they have witnessed and will endure.”

Winkler is being held at San Joaquin County Jail without bail. Further arraignment is at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 22.
