Charles C. Merkins was born on April 22, 1929 and passed peacefully on Sept. 2, 2017 at the age of 88. Charlie (Chuck) was born in an apartment over Schwartz’s Department Store in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvan­ia. He was delivered by his Aunt Florrie. His parents were Marie and Charles Merkins. When he was seven months old, his father passed away and for most of his young life, his grandmothe­r, Elizabeth Merkins and his Aunt, Helen Merkins, were his important care givers.

Charlie joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and spent most of his four years of service at Mather Field in Sacramento, as a radar operator. He met and married his wife Dorothy in 1953 during his Air Force assignment.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years and was very proud of their four children: Heidi Merkins, Chuck Merkins, Beth( Rich) Lougee and Kyle Merkins, eight grandchild­ren; Catherine and David (Shaunda) Dickstein, Danielle and Alex Merkins, Bailee (Miles) and Brent Lougee and Tyler and Connor Merkins. Also, his sisters-in-law; Donna Oswald of Galt and Joyce (Gary) White of Madras Oregon.

He had several careers and loved his retirement job as a custodian at Fairsite School.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Galt where he and Dorothy were married. He sang in the choir for many years. He never had any brothers or sisters and considered his Church family as brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Galt at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday September 16th, 2017. Burial will be private at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Dixon at a later date.
