Lodi Unified test scores see slight increase

- By John Bays

Although Lodi Unified School District saw an increase in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores from last year, California overall did not experience any noticeable increases.

The results of the tests were released on Wednesday, consisting of the scores of 3.2 million California students from grades three through eight as well as 11th graders.

The tests measured students’ progress in the areas of English language arts (ELA) and literacy, as well as mathematics. This is the third year that the tests were administered, and while California has seen few improvements since last year, LUSD has seen a small but noticeable climb since 2016.

Across the state, 48 percent of students met or exceeded the standards for ELA and literacy and 37 percent met or exceeded the math standards in 2017, compared to 49 percent meeting or exceeding ELA/literacy standards and 37 percent meeting or exceeding math standards in 2016.

In San Joaquin County, 39 percent or students met or exceeded ELA/literacy standards and 28 percent met or exceeded math standards this year, versus 38 percent and 28 percent last year.

Forty-two percent of Lodi Unified’s students met or exceeded this year’s ELA/literacy standards, a 2 percent increase from last year. Math score saw a similar increase, with 32 percent of students meeting or exceeding math standards this year compared to 30 percent from last year.

Stockton Unified School District saw a 1 percent decrease in ELA/literacy scores, and a 2 percent decrease in math. Twenty-four percent of students met or exceeded ELA/literacy standards (compared to 25 percent in 2016), and 18 percent met or exceeded math standards (compared to 20 percent in 2016).

While Galt Joint Union Elementary School District remained static in ELA/literacy scores from last year, with 43 percent of students meeting or exceeding the standards both years, they did see a dramatic increase in math scores, with 35 percent meeting or exceeding standards this year versus 23 percent last year.

Galt Joint Union High School District, however, saw a noticeable increase in both ELA/literacy and math scores, with 65 percent of students meeting or exceeding ELA/literacy standards (compared to 60 percent last year) and 31 percent meeting or exceeding math standards (compared to 23 percent last year).
