Tigers come up empty vs. Bulldogs

-

Two of the five singles matches for the Tokay High girls tennis team against Tracy were tough ones.

But the host Tigers came up short-handed, as the Bulldogs posted a 9-0 Tri-City Athletic League win on Tokay’s courts on Tuesday. The No. 2 singles match had Tokay’s Jasmin Gill going the distance against Tracy’s Isabella Ellis before dropping 6-2, 6-7, 7-0.

“Jasmin fought for every point,” said Tokay coach Steven Montalvo. “She ran everything down and made it a good match. She could’ve given up at anytime, but she didn’t.”

Clara Luna, the No. 6 player for Tokay (0-7 in the TCAL, 3-9), won the first set over Tracy’s Aujali Patel, who won 46, 6-4, 10-4.

Tokay’s No. 1 singles player in Rebecca Kostolaniova, a foreign exchange student from Slovakia, battled with the Bulldogs’ Tyler Ness. Using her serving and ground game as strong points in the first set, Kostolaniova battled hard against Ness, who barely won 6-4. In the second set, the two girls battled for points before Ness came out with the sweep at 6-2.

“Rebecca walked onto the team with some experience, but never faced competition,” said Montalvo of Kostolaniova. “She has a lot of heart and one of those people who people rally around. She’s been a good example to the ones who have been here in the program. I’m proud of all my girls.”

Other Tokay singles players competing were No. 3 Addi Stone, who lost 6-2, 6-0; Zoe Workman, at No. 4, fell 6-0, 6-2 and Michelle Maza, at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0.

In the doubles’ matches, Tokay’s No. 1 team of Guyneth Steele/Aleandrea Schnewis lost 6-1, 6-4, and No. 2 of Monique Maza/Stephanie Rios were defeated 6-0, 6-1. Esreida Mendoza/Stephanie Sandoval, the Tigers’ No. 3 team, fell 6-0, 6-0.

Lodi’s No. 2 singles player in junior Nikki Barajas went three sets to beat Lincoln’s Kate Shea 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. The only loss for the Flames was the No. 4 set, as the Trojans’ Erin Le posted a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win over the Flames’ Gabi Borra.
