LODI TENNIS TAKES DOWN TRACY

While Lodi wins, Tokay drops a close match to West to remain winless in league

The Lodi High girls tennis team have one more Tri-City Athletic League match against cross-town and rival Tokay today.

But on Wednesday afternoon, the Flames continued their winning ways, as they hosted the Tracy Bulldogs at Twin Arbors Tennis Club. Lodi (7-2 in the TCAL, 13-3) posted a 9-0 win over the Bulldogs.

All of the Flames’ nine matches went straight sets. In the singles’ matches, Lodi’s top player in Emma Canepa posted a 7-5, 6-0 win over Tyler Ness. The rest of the Flames’ singles players who won were Nikki Barajas, who plays in Lodi’s No. 2 spot; No. 3 Johnna Schroeder; No. 4 Gabi Borra; No. 5 Mia Carouba and No. 6 Jenna Dougherty.

The sisters of Kaylee and Alyssa Mataga, Lodi’s No. 1 doubles’ players, posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tracy’s Carly Johnson-Ellie Gold. The Flames’ No. 2 team of Franchesca Petersen-Jenna Mulrooney, along with No. 3’s Megan Kim-Cece Chinchiolo, recorded wins.

Should Lodi beat Tokay (09 in the TCAL, 3-11) this afternoon, the Flames will secure the league’s No. 2 seed behind league champion St. Mary’s and Lincoln at No. 3. The Sac-Joaquin Section team playoffs begin on Monday, Oct. 30.

Before the team playoffs, Lodi and Tokay will take part in the TCAL Tournament next Monday and Tuesday.

West 5, Tokay 4

In Tuesday’s league match on the Tigers’ home court, three of the singles’ matches went three sets for Tokay (0-9

in the TCAL, 3-11).

Notching wins for the Tigers were No. 1 singles player in Rebecca Kostolanio­va who went three sets to beat West’s Abihail Barrera 3-6, 7-6, 7-3. Addi Stone, in the No. 3 spot for Tokay, went the distance against the Wolf Pack’s Laasya Gudamselli to record a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory. In the No. 5 singles’ meeting, Tokay’s Clara Luna squared off against Cheyenne Bills, as they split their first two matches but Luna winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 win.

The Tigers’ No. 3 doubles team of Monique Meza-Yadira Medina needed only two sets to beat West’s Danielli Chan-Gurshabad Kour-Randhawa 6-3, 6-4.

Today’s Tokay-Lodi contest will take place at Twin Arbors Tennis Club, starting at 3:30 p.m.
