Lodi beats Tokay in TCAL tennis finale

Closing out the Tri-City Athletic League season, the Lodi High girls tennis team routed cross-town and rival Tokay 9-0 at Twin Arbors Tennis Club on Thursday afternoon.

The win also has Lodi (8-2 in the TCAL, 14-3) take second place in the league behind champion St. Mary’s. Earlier this week, St. Mary’s edged Lodi 5-4. Lodi, along with St. Mary’s and third place Lincoln, advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division

In the singles’ matches, Lodi’s top player in Emma Canepa, followed by No. 2 player Nikki Barajas, Johnna Schroeder, Gabi Borra, Mia Carouba and Jenna Dougherty, went straight sets of Tokay’s Rebecca Kostolonio­va, Jasmin Gill, Addi Stone, Molly Robison, Clara Luna and Zoe Workman respective­ly.

The Flames’ doubles teams of Franchessa Petersen-Jenna Mulrooney, Cece Chinchiolo-Megan Kim and Julia Archibeque-Julia Sherman also went straight sets to defeat Tokay’s Monique MesaYadina Medina, Michelle Meza-Jaqueline Villanneva­Gwyneth Steele and Julia Garlick-Bella Mendoza respective­ly.

VOLLEYBALL

Grace Polhemus had 18 digs for Tokay (0-9 in the TCAL, 12-21), which lost 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 in Thursday’s contest. Natalie Polhemus had 14 assists and Kayly Pau had 10 kills for the Tigers. Cianna Guidi eight kills, and Kass Erickson had eight assists. Frosh-soph

Ashley Johnson had 22 digs for Tokay, which lost 25-20, 25-16. Teammate Emily Youngberg had five kills and three digs and Emily Bacci four kills and three digs.

Frankie Tucker had 16 assists for Elliot Christian in Thursday’s Central California Athletic Alliance match. Bailey Correria had nine kills and seven digs, Sophia Butler five digs and Taylor Lewis four kills and three digs for Elliot (4-8 in the CCAA, 5-8) Freshmen

Hannah Jewell had 11 digs and an ace for the Tigers, while teammate Kennedy Gardner had seven aces, seven digs and two kills. Olivia Burford had seven digs, four assists and two aces, Lavryn Eisenbeis seven kills, six digs and two aces.

WATER POLO Varsity boys

Tristan Gorham had eight saves for Lodi in Thursday’s league meeting, plus a steal in goal.

Adam Taylor had three blocked shots and a steal. Victor Plunkett had three goals for the Flames, and Hayden Lewis and Brosnan Elrod two each. Braden Acosta and Eli Kim had one each. Frosh-soph boys

Hannah Combs had seven blocked shots for the Flames in Thursday’s contest. Aiyana Evans had three goals and a steal, Julia Costa three assists plus a goal and steal, Hannah Wilson three steals, two assists and a goal. Madison Rishwain and Lilly Kim had a goal each. Freshmen

FOOTBALL

Joseph Filippini scored four touchdowns for Tokay (43-1) in Thursday’s TCAL game at the Grape Bowl.\

Jacob Varney had two more touchdowns for the Tigers, Hose Brabo scored on a 2-point conversion. Wyatt James had an intercepti­on, and Dharub Walia and a fumble recovery.

Aldolfo Sanchez had touchdown runs of 21 and 22 yards and kicked five extra-points for Lodi.

Isaac Bishop, along with Joel Roque and Christian Zamora scored touchdowns on runs. Roque had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery, plus a sack, and Zamora eight tackles and Bishop six. Sanchez had an intercepti­on and Ty Mazza had a sack.

CYCLE BOWL Final races this weekend

The Lodi Cycle Bowl will host a doublehead­er this weekend.

On Saturday, Gates open at 2 p.m., with riders practicing at 3:30 p.m. and racing starts at 5 p.m.

Then on Sunday, the gates open at 8 a.m., practices at 10 and racing at noon.
