Galt sewer rate increases on today’s city council agenda

- By Jennifer Bonnett

GALT — To help foot the cost of $26 million-plus the City of Galt has had to pay to meet new state mandates, residents will likely see a wastewater rate increase as soon as Nov. 15.

The item is on today’s city council meeting agenda and includes a public hearing.

If approved by council members, ratepayers could see a new monthly fixed charge of $63.15, with a second increase of $3.48 per month in March 2019.

Developers wishing to build in Galt will also pay more than twice as much in water and storm drainage capacity fees if city council members approve that rate adjustment.

Beginning July 1, 2019, and each July thereafter, the city will adjust the fees annually.

The residential fees, however, will increase automatically through gradual steps until March 1, 2022.

These fees are charged to individual developments to ensure they pay their fair share of costs for anticipated capital improvements such as new treatment plants and systems.

At today’s meeting, council members are also sched- uled to:

• Appoint a new mayor and, if necessary, a vice mayor. The action is required after former Mayor Marylou Powers resigned and council members appointed Thomas Malson to replace her.

• Award a contract for construction of the industrial water treatment plant deep well project at a cost of $985,495.

• Execute a contract with George Reed, Inc. in the amount of $5.192 million for bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects.

• Conduct a public hearing and approve the construction of a 14-unit apartment building adjacent to the existing Trailridge Apartment Complex at 409 Lincoln Way.

• Introduce new employees Stacy Schafer and Dustin Watson

• Recognize United Methodist Church with the Community of Character Coalition Pride in Community Award.

• Appoint community members to vacant seats on the Beautification Committee, Commission on Aging and Public Safety Committee.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the city council chambers at City Hall, 380 Civic Drive, in Galt.
