Man arrested after lengthy Calaveras standoff

WALLACE — A despondent man visiting family in the Wallace area Friday night injured a woman with a knife, attempted to stab a deputy, threatened to kill himself and defeated several less-than-lethal attempts by law enforcemen­t to take him into custody before finally being subdued and arrested, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The man and woman, both from Oregon, got into an argument inside a home on Cottontail Lane off Messing Road south of Highway 12. Someone called the sheriff’s office about 9:25 p.m. to report the domestic disturbanc­e and said the man was intoxicate­d, armed with a knife and possibly suicidal.

The man, now in custody, was transporte­d to an out-of-county trauma center, where he was treated for self-inflicted stab wounds. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting corporal injury on his spouse, resisting arrest, assault on a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
