Man arrested after lengthy Calaveras standoff
WALLACE — A despondent man visiting family in the Wallace area Friday night injured a woman with a knife, attempted to stab a deputy, threatened to kill himself and defeated several less-than-lethal attempts by law enforcement to take him into custody before finally being subdued and arrested, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The man and woman, both from Oregon, got into an argument inside a home on Cottontail Lane off Messing Road south of Highway 12. Someone called the sheriff’s office about 9:25 p.m. to report the domestic disturbance and said the man was intoxicated, armed with a knife and possibly suicidal.
The man, now in custody, was transported to an out-of-county trauma center, where he was treated for self-inflicted stab wounds. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting corporal injury on his spouse, resisting arrest, assault on a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
