FOUNDATION GAMES TIP OFF HOOPS SEASON

- By Mike Bush

Jaylin Reed is continuing where he left off last season.

In Monday’s Sac-Joaquin Section’s Foundation Games, the junior guard on the Lodi High boys basketball team went on a scoring spree against McClatchy. Although the visiting Lions made lots of noise inside The Inferno, Lodi left its own gym with an unofficial 101-88 win over McClatchy.

“Not much defense was being played in this game,” said Lodi coach Dave Nutting, who is in his 14th season as coach. “We had a good offensive game, but I think both teams need to work on our defenses. We’ve got a couple of practices, so we need to size up our defense.”

Reed had 50 points in Monday’s game. Against McClatchy, Reed was scoring in different ways; from behind the 3-point line to scoring in the paint to making free throws. The Lions’ frustration of not being to stop Reed entering the fourth quarter showed; McClatchy fouled Reed, who sank 6-of-8 from the free throw line and was only 1-of-2 from the field.

“Both of us (Lodi and McClatchy) were going into the game blind,” Nutting said. “We didn’t know their personnel, they didn’t know our personnel.”

Moved up as a sophomore last season, Reed ended the regular season with 41 points against cross-town and TriCity Athletic League rival Tokay last February, which led to an 86-70 win at The Jungle last February. That’s 91 combined points — just 10 points off from the Flames’ final total points against the Lions.

Along with Reed producing a half-century on the night, Nutting was equally impressed with the Flames’ depth in the final eight minutes of the game. Lodi led 7772 entering the fourth quarter, and that’s when Nutting put in his substitute players.

“That is what the Foundation Game is all about,” said Nutting, who played his entire squad in the game.

Behind Reed in scoring was Derek Lamb with 14 points, Chase Shafter nine, Matt Nickel seven, Justin Blake six, Luis Perez and Colton Stout five each, Marcell Roberts four and A.J. Castaneda one.

Wins and losses in the Foundation Games, which the admission into the games raises money to the A. Dale Lacky Scholarship and Women in Sports Conference, don’t count toward a team’s overall record.

Lodi could see McClatchy again toward the end of this week. The Flames and Lions are taking part in the Elk Grove Tournament that starts with Lodi playing host Elk Grove on Thursday at 7 p.m. In that same tournament is River City of West Sacramento, which features former Tokay coach Travis Okamoto, who resigned over the summer to take over the Raiders’ program.

Girls: McClatchy 73, Lodi 45

In its Foundation Game, Lodi played catch-up with Mc-

Clatchy the entire game.

But in the third quarter, the Flames trimmed the Lions’ lead to 27-21. But McClatchy, which used a full-court press most of the game, turned up the heat on the Flames, who had no answer. Toward the end of the quarter, McClatchy lead 42-28.

Leading scorers for Lodi were guard Marissa Fabian, who had 10 points. Forwards Ellie Van Tassel and Ashley Vasquez had seven points each.

Boys: Elliot 77, Franklin 51

Nate Bond had 31 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles in their Foundation Game at the Yellowjackets’ gym in Stockton.

Cody Doell had a double-double for Elliot; 19 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Figueroa, who along with Doell and Bond are the three players who led the Eagles to winning the Central California Athletic Alliance and the section’s Division VI titles and played for the NorCal title last season, had 12 points that included three, 3-pointers.

Other scorers for Elliot, which led 48-25 at halftime, were Ian Malagon with five points and seven assists, Calieb Williams and Logan Kottinger three points each, and Nate Gotgoto-Washington and Dee Ware two points each.
