What is sensible gun control?

-

Editor: In the last few weeks there has been a steady stream of “Letters to the Editor," making the pitch for more gun control in the wake of recent high-profile shootings.

Remarkably, the recommendations mentioned would have done virtually nothing in stopping or preventing these tragedies. The articles all start with buzz words such as “reasonable,” common sense, or “sensible.” Perhaps using these aforementioned words are believed to appeal to the masses!

As mentioned in another “Letter to the Editor,” California has some of the strictest gun control measures in the United States, yet every year since 2009 saw homicide rates increase! In 2016, there were 1,930 homicides (CA/DOJ).

This is a 3.7 percent increase from 2015. With the anti-gun zealots the solution is if previous gun control efforts haven’t worked then more are needed. Does this makes sense? No it doesn’t, but then again, most of these anti-gun leftists are emotion-driven and not operating on logic!

In California for 2016 there were 280 murders with knives, yet I don’t hear calls for “knife control,” or a drive to end knife violence. How can we let our citizens die needlessly by knives?

Something must be done, and done now! Let’s put reasonable, common sense and sensible restrictions on knives: must not have serrations (too hard to close wounds), blades should be made of plastic, have a waiting period before you can cut your steak. We must not allow one more person to die from these deadly devices.

Ludicrous, yes, but so are calls for more gun control when the ones already in place have failed to prevent or reduce crime. How about bringing back three strikes, rescinding Prop 47, AB 109, AND 56? KEN WINCHELL Lockeford
