Flames girls hold off Manteca to win on the road

The Lodi High girls basketball team maintained a slight lead through the entire game on Tuesday to open the season with a narrow 52-47 victory over Manteca.

The Flames led by as much as eight in the second half, and the Buffalos narrowed the gap to as close as three.

Marissa Fabian led Lodi with 18 points, followed by Zoe Faulkner with 11, Malina Nino and Ellie Van Tassell with five each, Ashley Vasquez with four, Annette Vasquez with three, and two each from Bella Fugazi, Aiyana Evans and Veronica Alejandrez.

Lodi (1-0) will next face Benicia at the Edison Tournament on Thursday.

Liberty Ranch 54, Calaveras 47

Anjolina Garcia had 14 points, and Ashley Kirbyson chipped in with 11 in Liberty Ranch’s first official win of the season. The Hawks played at Linden in Monday’s SacJoaquin Section Foundation Games.

Olivia Nelson and Courtney Six had six points each for the Hawks, who 19-of-60 from the field and were 10-of15 from the free throw line. Kloey Calkins had 11 rebounds for Liberty Ranch.

BOYS BASKETBALL Varsity Bear Creek 56, Tokay 49

Tokay trailed by one point at halftime and fell behind in the second half of Tuesday’s season opener.

Victor Nateras led Tokay with 18 points and five assists, Adam Johnson had 16 points and four rebounds, Max Starkovich had eight points, nine rebounds and four assists, Chase Ivey had four points and six rebounds and Mohammad Ibrahim had three points.

Tokay 2, Stagg 1

Ivan Rosales scored the game-winner about 20 minutes into the second half off an assist by Alfonso Ochoa to give Tokay the victory in Tuesday’s opener at the Grape Bowl.

Luis Plaza scored in the first half on a penalty kick. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

Goalkeeper Luis Alvarado recorded four saves, and Alejandro Andrade, Nick Monteon, Rafael Garcia and Jason Murguia played solid defense in front of him. Frosh-soph

Tokay 9, Stagg 0

Jose Contreras and Brandon Razo scored three goals each, along with two from Eduardo Guillen and one from Rigo Godoy in Tuesday’s blowout victory. Contreras, Anthony Quiroz and Andres Ramirez had two assists each, while Guillen, Yahir Serrano and Arturo Rivera had one each.

Goalkeeper­s Jorge Quiroz and Jorge Oregel had one save each as they combined for the shutout.

Lodi 5, Bear Creek 0

Jeffrey Solis and Yobani Osorio had two goals each to help Lodi win on Tuesday, while Danny Maldonado had a goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Ian Watanabe had two saves for the shutout.

D.J. Van Ness played well in the midfield, while Mason Robbins had a big part in the shutout on defense.
