» STANFORD AND CAL BOTH GO DOWN

- By Michael Wagaman

BERKELEY — Holland Woods had 12 points and a season-high 13 assists and Portland State beat California 10681 on Thursday night in the final nonconference game for both teams.

Bryce Canda scored 23 points to lead six Vikings players in double figures. Deontae North added 20 points including 14 in the second half, Michael Mayhew scored 15 points on a career high-tying five 3-pointers and Brandon Hollins had 12 points and six rebounds.

The Vikings (10-3) had never won 10 games before Christmas until their blowout of California at Haas Pavilion.

That added to an already impressive nonconference slate for Portland State. The Vikings also have wins over Utah State, Stanford and Santa Clara this season.

As has been the case all season, first-year coach Barret Peery’s team used its smothering pressure defense to set the tone. Portland State forced Cal into a season-high 26 turnovers that led to 40 points. The Vikings also held a 26-6 advantage in assists.

It was the second game between the two schools and the first since 1997.

Don Coleman scored 19 points and Marcus Lee had 15 points and nine rebounds for California (6-7). The Golden Bears had won three straight but fell behind early and trailed all game.

California’s frustrations boiled over late in the first half when Nick Hamilton was called for a technical foul after shoving Hollins in the face during a break in play.

Azubuike gets 7 dunks, No. 14 Kansas tops Stanford

SACRAMENTO — Frank Mason III is mere months removed from his sensational Kansas career, and this time he sat courtside in his new arena as an NBA rookie ready to watch as a fan and offer some thoughts and encouragement to his old Jayhawks teammates who remain dear friends.

Mason provided a simple postgame message: Keep winning. Be aggressive on both ends of the floor.

“It’s Frank,” Devonte’ Graham said, “we’re in his building.”

Udoka Azubuike certainly took charge on offense, scoring his team’s initial 10 points and dunking seven times on the way to 24 points as No. 14 Kansas ran away from Stanford early for a 75-54 victory Thursday night.

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and Graham each added 14 points as the Jayhawks won their third straight game following defeats to Stanford’s Pac-12 foes Washington and Arizona State.

Playing at the NBA Kings second-year Golden 1 Center with several Sacramento players sitting courtside, Kansas (10-2) had eight dunks and six 3-pointers in the first half alone while shooting 62.5 percent. Both programs wrapped up nonconference play with the second matchup of a fourgame series between the schools.

Michael Humphrey had 20 points and seven rebounds for the cold-shooting Cardinal (6-7) as Stanford coach Jerod Haase faced his former school where he starred from 1995-97 under then-Kansas coach Roy Williams.
