Patterson hits winning 3-pointer for Liberty Ranch

-

Jalen Patterson was clutch for the Liberty Ranch High boys basketball team against a familiar playoff foe in West Campus at the St. Hope Elite Hoop Classic at Sacramento High on Saturday.

A sophomore guard, Patterson hit the gamewinning 3-pointer as time expired, which gave Liberty Ranch (12-2) a 67-66 victory over the Cougars. Patterson finished with 34 points, and was named to the all-tournament team.

“I drew up a play to get him the ball on the run to make a play, and we executed perfectly,” said Liberty Ranch coach Josh Williams of Patterson. I knew if he could get a shot off he would make it. He’s clutch.”

In three of the four tournament games, Patterson scored 30 or more points.

The win gave the Hawks 11th place at the tournament.

Liberty Ranch led 46-38 at halftime. But West Campus outscored the Hawks 19-10 in the third quarter to take a 57-56 lead.

“Missing three starters and Jalen had (a) 100 degree temperature,” Williams said. “We have multiple guys who can play. They stepped up for us and followed Jalen’s lead.”

Other scorers for Liberty Ranch were Jayden Baroni and Isaac Padilla, each of whom had nine points each.

The win was sweet for the Hawks, who have lost to the Cougars the last two seasons in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV semifinals at The Jungle on the Tokay High campus.
