“I’m pleased with the continued investments in education in the proposed budget that will ultimately help our future workforce and grow our economy. I’m especially supportive of providing one year free tuition at our community colleges.

“But we also need to ensure that we have space for every qualified student in our CSU system. According to the Faculty Association, 31,400 students were turned away last year. We need to focus on expanding enrollment at Stanislaus State.

“But overall, our economy is strong, we’re building a healthy rainy day reserve and the proposed budget reflects a smart path forward.”

Assemblyman Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove) 9th Assembly District

“I am encouraged by the Governor’s plan to continue balancing our budget while bolstering our rainy day fund. The proposal to increase the state’s rainy day fund by $3.5 billion will allow us to be better prepared for any potential economic downturns and will help stabilize our fiscal future.

“Education continues to be one of my top priorities and I applaud the Governor’s proposal to fully fund the K-12 Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). Accelerating LCFF will provide schools with $3 billion in new funding to help ensure all students receive a high quality public education regardless of their socioeconomic status or what schools they attend.

“Additionally, the Governor’s proposal includes $4.6 billion in new transportation funding to repair our roads, highways, and bridges. I intend to work hard to make certain a fair share of this funding will be allocated for projects in the 9th Assembly District.

“Furthermore, as Chair of Budget Subcommittee No. 4, I plan on continuing to work with my colleagues to examine this proposal to ensure that California continues to provide adequate services for our most vulnerable and at-risk populations.”

Assemblyman Heath Flora (R-Ripon) 12th Assembly District

“We just got the budget today so we’re still reviewing it, but with an expected surplus of billions of dollars, I think it’s important that we put some of that surplus money into paying off the state’s longterm debt and also increasing the rainy day fund.”
