Lodi News-Sentinel

Why can’t we all just get along?

- BRUCE SCHWEIGERDT J. KURT ROBERTS

Editor: Frequent contributor to the News-Sentinel’s letters to the editor, Lange Winckler, recently exhorted readers to love one another — that love conquers all (citing scripture). Yet his continual and successive letters, unfortunately, bear a different tone. A case in point is his “President using scare tactics to earn votes.”

It goes without saying, that there wasn’t much love shown in the words of his letter. Winckler surely must know, calling someone a “billionaire blowhard” does little to win friends and influence people. In fact, in our current world of politics, it smacks of Democrats who are sore losers, as well as those who delight in themselves as being “Trump haters.”

When Mr. Winckler accuses the president of “poisoning the atmosphere” he makes it difficult, if not impossible, for reasonable minds to dialogue. I, for one, hope that is not his intent!

And it could well be the most hateful thing you could say about someone is that he has “sold his soul to the devil,” an accusation that others often claim (and firmly believe) the Clintons have done over the years. Such words are meant to hurt, hate, and divide; not love, heal and unite.

If the Wincklers of this world really seek a peaceful (and love-filled) coexistence, they just might try to love their neighbors as themselves. It has to start somewhere. Perhaps a local organization like the Breakthrough Project could help us in that endeavor? Let’s give it a try. Let’s make Lodi great again!

Need more notice on water shut-off

Editor: For the sixth time in the last three weeks, I have had the water shut off due to the ridiculous water meter mandate.

I really don’t mind maneuvering around the heavy equipment on nearly a daily basis and don’t mind too very much having to park down the street the six or seven times they have found it necessary to dig up the street and or sidewalk in front of my house, but when it happens on a Saturday with less than 24 hours notice, I have to question the competence of the contractor and the people who picked them.

A pink slip dropped on the sidewalk in front of my house is not an acceptable form of communication in today’s society. The taxpayers of Lodi deserve much better than this.
