DAR honors American history essay winners

The El Toyon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored 15 American history essay contest winners, their principals, teachers, parents and guests at an award ceremony and tea on March 1 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lodi.

Students in public and private schools in fifth through eighth grades as well as home-schooled students were eligible to participat­e. More than 100 students from St. Peter Lutheran School and Vineyard Christian Middle School participat­ed.

This year’s topic was “WWI: The War to End All Wars.”

Each school selected the top three essays from each grade. Winners at the chapter level received a certificat­e and scholarshi­p money. Firstplace winners received bronze medals and their essays were forwarded to DAR California District II to compete at the district level.

The 2017 essay contest winners are:

• Eighth grade, Daniel Winter, Vineyard Christian Middle School

• Seventh grade, Emily Tanaka, St. Peter Lutheran School

• Sixth grade, Connor Overbo, Vineyard Christian Middle School

• Fifth grade, Annabelle Ebbs, St. Peter Lutheran School

Daniel Winter, Emily Tanaka and Annabelle Ebbs were district winners.
