Cobleigh ready for new role at Galt

- By Mike Bush

GALT — Tim Cobleigh is ready to tackle his new role as the new Galt High football coach.

The 1989 Galt High graduate, who is in his fourth year working as the school’s campus supervisor, was approved at the Galt Joint Union High School’s Board of Trustees’ meeting last week. Cobleigh takes over for Jermaine Allen, who was the Warriors’ coach for the last two seasons. Allen submitted his resignation to Galt High Athletic Director Matt Silva in January.

“It’s truly an honor to be the head coach at Galt High,” said Cobleigh on Wednesday during the Warriors’ weight lifting session. “I played here with (late and former Galt football coach) Erv Hatzenbuhler. We had a long standing winning tradition.”

The new coach plans to run the wing-T or double wing offense, which is what the Warriors ran when he was the offensive coordinator in 2015.

The last two seasons, Galt has finished with an overall record of 3-17. All of its victories came last season.

“A little bit of shotgun,” Cobleigh said. “Me and some of the coaches are still working out some of the details of the playbook. We’re trying to decide what fits us best.”

Leading the way is junior quarterback Robert Bulahan Jr., who started as a sophomore last fall.

“He’s fantastic,” said Cobleigh of Bulahan Jr., who was one of the nearly twodozen players in the weight room. “He’s got a really strong skill set. He’s a great leader on the team.”

Returning players from last year’s squad and sophomores who will become juniors next school year, and not playing a spring sport, were in the school’s weight room on Wednesday. At this time, the players are working out in the weight room Tuesday through Thursday until the end of the school year.

“In the hour and a half, we really want to get in there and keep a good tempo,” Cobleigh said. “Constant movement. Not a whole lot of down time. That’s what the kids have been doing, and they have responded to it.”

Cobleigh said there are students who are part of the school’s baseball and track and field teams who are planning to hit the weight room once their sports team’s seasons are done. Other students on campus who have played in the Warriors’ grid program have also expressed interests in playing this upcoming season, the coach said.

Before running the Warriors’ offense, which was the double-wing in 2015, he was the frosh-soph head coach from 2013-14. Before, he was

the frosh/soph team’s defensive coordinator. In 2007 and 2008, Cobleigh was the freshmen football head coach. In 2011, he coached in the Galt Jr. Warriors youth program.

For the last two seasons, Cobleigh has been the Galt High wrestling coach. At this time, it’s uncertain if he’ll continue his role in wrestling coach.

“I want to,” Cobleigh said. “That’s my plan to continue coaching wrestling as well. That’s entirely up to (school’s) administration.”

One thing he is stressing to all players returning and wanting to play: Make sure they have a 2.0 or higher grade point average.

“Some kids are working on their grades,” Cobleigh said. “If you’re below a 2.0, you’re (studying) not out here; you’re working on your grades.”

Galt will kickoff this season against one of California’s best small schools. On Friday, Aug. 24, the Warriors will host CIF Division V-A state champion Fortuna, which is in the North Coast Section. Three months ago, Fortuna knocked off Katella 54-33 in the state title game.

After the Week 1 opener, Galt will play Linden, Valley and Mira Loma, both of Sacramento, and Franklin in preseason. Then the Warriors open Sierra Valley Conference play against El Dorado.

Galt will play all of its five home games this season at Liberty Ranch, which is Galt’s second high school. Liberty Ranch is projected to have its stadium ready, which will have artificial turf, all-weather track and stadium lights, next month. At last week’s Galt Joint Union High School Board of Trustees’ meeting, the board members voted to extend the renovation of the Erv Hatzenbuhler Field at Warrior Stadium completed, which would also include new stands, artificial turf and an all-weather track, through 2019.

The focus, Cobleigh and his assistant coaches are preparing their players for the upcoming season that includes lots of weight training and summer workouts.

“I think we have the kids here at Galt High,” Cobleigh said. “Go out and win some football games this year.”
