LODI’S ABERLE NAMED MVP

Brooke Aberle was recognized for her contributi­ons on the Lodi High girls basketball team recently.

The 5-foot-11 junior forward was named the Tri-City Athletic League’s co-MVP. Aberle shares the honors with Lincoln guard Taylor Lowe. Aberle and the Flames finished tied for the top spot of the league with Lincoln at 7-1, and went 16-11 overall that included a SacJoaquin Section Division II playoff game.

Aberle, who missed most of the Flames’ pre-season due to an ankle injury, led the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game, and 6.6 rebounds per game. She also made 22 of 58 3-pointers for 38 percent, and made 21 of 30 free throws for 70 percent.

There were a combined eight Lodi and Tokay girls basketball players who were named to the TCAL’s first and second teams, along with the defensive and honorable mention teams. Representi­ng Lodi on the first team were two more juniors in guard Marissa Fabian and center Ellie Van Tassel.

Fabian, who started in the Flames’ backcourt as a sophomore during the 2016-17 season, averaged 12.2 points per game and 4.9 boards per game. In 27 games, Fabian had 101 assists, the most on the team, and 79 steals. She also made 104 of 165 free throws for an 81 percent.

Van Tassel was part of the Flames’ trio of scoring with Fabian and Aberle. Van Tassel averaged 11.5 points per game, and 8.8 rebounds per game. She made 125 of 377 shots from the field for a 37 percent. Van Tassel led the Flames in total rebounds with 237.

Tokay freshman guard Chloe BoronTrott­er made the first team. The point guard led the Tigers in scoring, 14.7 points per game. She also made 69 of 100 free throws, 35 steals and 19 assists.

Earning second team honors for Tokay were two seniors; center/forward Anessa Spradely and forward Katie Price. Spradely averaged 11.7 points per game, 17 blocked shots and 12 steals. Price averaged six points per game, plus made 25 of 66 free throws for 38 percent.

Named to defensive team was Lodi guard Malina Nino and Tokay guard Mira QueiroloPa­tino, both seniors. Nino, who was also named to the honorable mention list, she had 79 assists and 47 steals. She averaged 5.4 points per game, and 26 of 43 free throws for 60 percent. Queirolo-Patino had 11 steals.

Tokay’s lone representa­tive to the honorable mention was guard Destiny Lopez, a senior. Lopez made 13 of 24 free throws for 54 percent, and 20 assists.

Boys

Lodi guard Jaylin Reed, a junior, made the TCAL’s second team. Reed is a two-year starter.

Tokay center Max Starkovich was named to the all-defense team. He pulled down an average of 5.5 rebounds per game. He also had 39 assists and 15 blocked shots.

Tapped for the honorable mention list was Tokay guard Victor Nateras, who led the Tigers in scoring at 10.9 points per game.

Tracy’s Isiah Hawthorne and Lincoln’s Andre Kelly were named the league’s co-MVPs.
