Liberty Ranch, Elliot Christian taking part in Optimist All-Star Game

Members of the Liberty Ranch and the Elliot Christian boys basketball teams will be well-represente­d in Sacramento on Saturday, April 7.

Liberty Ranch boys basketball coach Josh Williams and assistant coaches Gary Lewis and John Williams will be taking part in the 41st annual Optimist High School Basketball All-Star Games. The trio will coach the Boys South Small Schools team, facing the North squad, at Sacramento High. Tip-off is scheduled at noon. Josh Williams is the Boys South Small Schools head coach, with Lewis and John Williams assisting.

Center Chris Fielding is Liberty Ranch’s lone representa­tive. Helping the Hawks to a third consecutiv­e Sierra Valley Conference title this past winter, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Fielding averaged 7.9 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game. Liberty Ranch, Galt’s second high school, finished its season with a 26-6 record that included another deep run in the Sac-Joaquin Section and CIF Nor-Cal playoffs. Five of the 13 players on the boys’ small schools roster played on SVC teams from Cordova, El Dorado and Union Mine.

On the roster with Fielding is Elliot Christian guard Nate Bond and forward/center Cody Doell. Bond, a 6-foot guard, averaged 20.3 points per game last winter. Doell averaged 16.4 points per game. They helped Elliot to a 22-7 record. During the 2016-17 season, the Eagles’ duo were part of the team that won the Central California Athletic Associatio­n and Sac-Joaquin Section Division V titles, and advanced to the CIF NorCal title game.

Other Optimist games being played throughout the day, with a North vs. South format, are the girls’ small schools at 10 a.m.; girls’ large schools at 2 p.m. and the boys’ large school at 4 p.m. All games will be played at Sacramento High.

Admission is $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors, $5 for students and $3 for children under 12.
