Giants’ Suarez solid in debut, but Dyson falters
SAN FRANCISCO — Giants pitcher Andrew Suarez offered a self-critique that has seldom been heard from a rookie pitcher coming off his major league debut.
“A lot of people say my weakness is I throw too many strikes,” Suarez said Wednesday following a 7-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks before a crowd of 35,041 at AT&T Park.
Suarez out-pitched Tyler Beede, the fellow rookie who made his first start in the majors the previous night. In 5 1/3 innings, Suarez walked none and struck out seven, throwing 62 strikes in 83 pitches.
The defeat ended a 3-4 homestand for the Giants, who begin a 10-game road trip Thursday night in San Diego.
The Giants’ offense, however, went silent after a threerun fifth inning that included a two-run home run by Buster Posey that tied the game at 3.
Suarez and reliever Sam Dyson were both victimized by Paul Goldschmidt, the Arizona first baseman who counts AT&T as his own personal batting practice facility.
Goldschmidt, struggling when he came in to the series, hit a home run off Suarez, a double off Dyson and drove in three runs. The Diamondbacks broke the game open with a three-run seventh inning and five relief pitchers backed starter Robbie Ray, giving up just a single hit in the last 5 1/3 innings.
Fernando Salas, the second of those relievers, was the winning pitcher. Suarez was tied at 3 when he walked off to a nice ovation from the home crowd, but Dyson’s rough outing made his first major league decision a loss.
A left-hander whose fastball ball is in the low 90s, Suarez mowed through Arizona with three consecutive 12-3 innings and was unscored on through three innings.
