New adventures await for Garlick

- By Mike Bush

Daniel Garlick is making the move to Southern California.

In front of family, friends and Tokay High football teammates on the school campus on Wednesday, Garlick, who was the Tigers’ quarterback last fall, signed an agreement to continue his education and play football at Whittier College in Whittier. The liberal arts college is located in the Los Angeles area.

The 5-foot-8 and 160-pound Garlick, who passed for 1,290 yards and 11 touchdowns last fall, said he looked at eight colleges, including Whittier. Seven of those campuses were out-ofstate. What he liked about his three visits to the Southern California college was the Whittier College football coaching staff’s approach to-

ward him.

“I just felt the coaching staff really wanted me,” said Garlick, “and I wanted to go somewhere where I was wanted. To go out and compete at quarterback. I really bonded with them.”

Last season, Whittier College posted an 0-8 record that included an 0-6 record in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which is Division III. The tough 2017 season is hoping to be the rebuilding blocks of a better season this fall.

“We have a lot of the same interests of what we wanted to happen in football,” said Garlick, who has a 3.6 grade point average at Tokay. “We just have the same kind of goals: Go in and compete and win. I like that. They (returning players) treated me like I was one of their own; they were excited. That was the major reason I wanted to come and play with them.”

Garlick, who plans to major in kinesiology and an emphasis in sports management, already has his work out plan that the coaches have set up for him.

“A lot of cardio, squats,” Garlick said. “A lot of core work.”

After he graduates from Tokay High in early June, Garlick plans to return to Southern California to learn the college football team’s playbook. Whittier College runs a mixture of Iformation and spread offenses.

“So I can get a head before I go into my first practice,” Garlick said.

He feels his strong work ethics will help him excel on the next level — both in the classrooms and the field.

“My biggest attribute is that I feel my work ethic will translate in college, and I'll be fine,” Garlick said.

In the meantime, he’s enjoying life at Tokay in the final weeks leading up to graduation.

“Not to screw up at this point,” Garlick said. “Just keep doing what I’m doing.”
