Model plane event set for weekend
Today Radio Control Modelers to welcome experienced flyers and newcomers in Isleton
As part of their seventh annual “West Coast Aerobatic Challenge” this Saturday and Sunday, Tokay Radio Control Modelers are planning to host both a contest for the experienced flyers and an introduction to flying for those who are new to the hobby.
The event, which will be held at TCRM’s flying field located at 18303 Tyler Island Road in Isleton, is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on both days, following registration at 7:30 a.m., a pilots’ meeting at 8:30 a.m., and “wheels up” at 9 a.m.
This year’s event itself will not feature necessarily anything new, but the venue has undergone some changes for this year’s installment, contest coordinator Don Brown said.
“There’s nothing dramatically new, but we’ve added to the landing strip and the pit area, and we’ve doubled the size of the shade structure, so it should be more pleasant for the onlookers and the pilots as well,” Brown said.
While the pilots’ registration fee is $45, the general public is encouraged to come out to the event at no cost, and beginners to the art of flying will not be charged for their first-time experience. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be demonstrations of freestyle flying scheduled for noon, and 28 of the top flyers will participate.
Brown emphasized that even if there are people who have never touched the controls of an airplane, this event will have something to offer them. He also has said the two-day event will be an enjoyable way to spend the weekend and enjoy the hobby that he and his peers have come to love.
“We invite the public to come out and observe and get involved. There are things they can do right away to help them even if they don’t know anything about flying airplanes,” Brown said. “It’s a great hobby, and there’s a lot of families that do it, and it’s a way to get young people away from their cellphones and iPads for awhile too.”
Hamburgers and drinks will also be available at an additional fee, which will go towards the support of Tokay Radio Control Modelers and the flying facility. For detailed directions to the flying field, visit TRCM’s website at
