- — Will DeBoard, assistant commissioner, Sac-Joaquin Section

On Friday, the Sac-Joaquin Section announced the top 10 boys and girls athletic programs in the second annual Commissioner’s Cup.

On the boys side, Placer High of Auburn earned 31 points to claim the crown. The Hillmen were led by section championships in cross country, football, golf and track and field. In second place, just two points behind, was Rio Americano High of Sacramento. The Raiders saw their teams win section titles in water polo, golf and swimming and diving.

Other boys’ teams in San Joaquin County that are in the top 10 were Escalon at seventh place and St. Mary’s ninth.

On the girls side, Davis High of Davis earned 25 points to win it all. The Blue Devils won section championships in water polo, swimming and diving, soccer and track and field. Davis won the Commissioner’s Cup on the girls side last year as well. Runner-up St. Mary’s was five points back; the Rams won titles in golf, girls basketball and softball.

Escalon and Ripon Christian finished tied for 10th place among county schools on the girls’ side.

The winners are determined by a points system that includes five points for a section championship, three points for a section runner-up placing, two points for making the semifinals or placing third and one point for placing fourth in a team-place finish sport.

The Commissioner’s Cup is a new program designed to recognize the allaround top athletic programs in the section based on comprehensive excellence in interscholastic competition.
