MEXICO CITY — An Aeromexico passenger plane with 101 people on board crashed immediately after it took off in northern Mexico on Tuesday, but the regional governor said there were no deaths in the accident.

“It has been confirmed that there were no fatalities in the accident of the flight AM2431,” Durango state Gov. Jose Aispuro said on Twitter.

He said medical personnel were attending to injured victims, without giving their number. Broadcaster Milenio had earlier put the total at 80.

The accident occurred at Guadalupe Victoria airport in the city of Durango, Aispuro tweeted.

The plane was carrying 97 passengers and four crew, according to the Transport Ministry. Aeromexico said the plane was an Embraer 190 with a capacity for 100 passengers.

The aircraft was en route from Durango to Mexico City, Aispuro told media company Televisa.

“It was raining, there was a storm, I think they tried to cancel the takeoff but were no longer able to,” he said.

The plane came down near the end of the runway, caught fire and was “seriously” damaged.

Some passengers reported a “strange movement” when the plane took off, Aispuro added.

He said the fire had been brought under control.

Television images showed a column of black smoke rising from the site, which had been cordoned off by police.

Milenio showed images of rescuers attending to passengers, some of whom left the plane without help, according to the report.

“I hope that the crew and all passengers are well,” President Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted. He said he had instructed the army, civil protection and transport authorities to cooperate in handling the accident.

“Our priority is to guarantee the security of our clients and the crew on board and we are working to that end,” Aeromexico tweeted.
